PhD Student

Pavel is a PhD student in Computer Science and Information at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, with prior experience in product management in the tech industry.

He works on foundation model capabilities across modalities — with a focus on data efficiency, cross-domain transfer, and deployment in underresourced conditions. At the Shepherd Research Lab he builds clinical transformer models on electronic health records to improve cancer risk prediction for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander populations.

His work on vision-language data curation won first place at the NeurIPS 2025 Data Curation for Vision-Language Reasoning competition, showing that strategic sample selection can outperform scale on challenging reasoning benchmarks.
