
Data from the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center indicates that breast cancer represents the most common cancer among women, comprising 34% of cases, with the second-highest mortality rate in Hawaiʻi — surpassed only by lung-cancer deaths.
John Shepherd, chief scientific officer of the UH Cancer Center and director of the Hawaiʻi and Pacific Islands Mammography Registry (HIPIMR), leads efforts to identify individuals at high risk for invasive breast cancer, determine methods for early detection, and explore prevention strategies.
“Catching cancer early saves lives,” Shepherd stated.
