Our mission

Aligned with the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center, AI PHI’s mission is to reduce the burden of cancer, especially in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. Our research objectives:

  • Accurately identify those at high risk of cancer
  • Develop novel interventions to reduce cancer risk
  • Detect cancers early — in their most treatable and survivable state

Our approach

We pursue this mission by:

  • Validating AI cancer-risk and detection models in the local population, with its unique ethnic and cultural qualities
  • Developing AI models from regional data when off-the-shelf models prove inadequate
  • Supporting AI use in the region through pilot project funding for cancer-related projects
  • Providing technical support and physical resources to students and faculty
  • Collaborating with academic and industry partners aligned with the mission
