What is a DXA scan?

Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) uses small amounts of x-ray to measure body composition. A DXA scan can:

  • quantify and locate body-fat percentage and lean muscle mass percentage
  • measure bone mineral density
  • monitor bone density and body composition trends over time

The scan is FDA-approved to measure visceral adipose tissue (VAT) — the deep fat surrounding internal organs. VAT is linked to type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

How to prepare

  • Avoid calcium supplements 24 hours before the scan
  • Have a lighter meal or fast beforehand
  • You’ll change into a gown
  • Remove zips, hooks, jewelry, and buckles

What to expect

You’ll lie on a table while a scanning arm passes over your body. The whole scan typically takes less than 10 minutes. Participants receive a detailed body-composition report with regional analysis.
